The brushless generator design uses a permanent magnet that does not wear down like brushes in a traditional generator, so it’s more efficient and quieter than its counterpart. But this also means it requires additional components to maintain operation. In addition, Brushless generators are heavier than their counterparts because they require an electric starter system to get them going. With brushed generators, the brushes create friction with the spinning armature coils inside the machine to generate electricity through electromagnetic induction.

Which Generator Should You Buy?

Brushed generators are less expensive, but brushless generators have many advantages. Brushless generators can be more efficient in energy use, generate cleaner power and run quieter since they don’t have the vibration noise that brushed generator has. They also offer a longer lifespan because there is no wear on any parts like brushes which you would find with a brushed generator.

The only thing to keep in mind when purchasing either type of generator is what you’ll primarily need it for – if it’s just backup power or if you plan on using it frequently for long periods at a time. If the latter is your case, then go with an inverter-based model instead of one without an inverter so that your devices will work properly while using the generator.
