The track is designed with steel edged rotating gripper segments. When power is supplied to the external drive sprocket, the track moves, the grippers rotate to deploy, spring loaded, only on the bottom of the track. Grippers extend and retract as they enter and leave the bottom part of the track. When power is not supplied to the external drive sprocket, the track freewheels, and the grippers fold flat for gliding.
The mechanicals are all housed in a snow sealed central cannister. Teflon glides, on polished metal are used as seals. However the mechanicals are designed to operate with some snow penetration.
